Cadet Wellness at Sea – India and Sri Lanka
Taking your training to the next level

Our bespoke programme for reshaping wellbeing and welfare for thousands of maritime cadets and trainees in India is now also available for maritime schools in Sri Lanka.
We are partnered with the grant-making ITF Seafarers’ Trust to create and roll out this unique training, which complements and enhances the current curriculum across the Indian subcontinent.
This bespoke Wellness at Sea programme designed exclusively for the next generation of seafarers provides in-depth wellness training and support specifically to help prepare cadets and trainees for their life at sea.
We are also grateful for the collaboration of the National Union of Seafarers, Sri Lanka, who are supporting the promotion of this training across their island.
Laying the foundation for long-term improvements in seafarer welfare, the programme uses Sailors’ Society’s experienced global training team and emphasises the importance of wellbeing. It gives these young seafarers early exposure to the realities of life at sea and equips them with the practical tools that help maintain their and their peers’ mental and physical health throughout their careers.
This innovative training programme makes a tangible and sustainable difference, not just to this new generation, but to the industry as a whole.
“Listening to cadets, ratings and trainees who attend our global Wellness at Sea conferences, we see there can be a wide gap between their perception and the realities of life at sea. Our early intervention ensures they are better prepared, more confident and supported throughout their maritime careers.”
Sara Baade, CEO, Sailors’ Society
India
The ITF’s partnership with Sailors’ Society in India has already shown how important addressing the physical, mental, emotional, and social aspects of life at sea is in fostering healthier, more resilient maritime professionals.
“Here at NUMSA, we look forward to extending this partnership to Africa so that this holistic approach to wellness can make a profound impact on this continent, promoting not only personal health among our cadets, ratings and trainees as they embark on their careers at sea, but also safer and more effective shipboard operations.”
Irvin Jim – General Secretary, NUMSA
“The ‘Wellness at Sea’ programme was an exceptional addition to our training for pre-sea cadets, equipping them with essential skills and insights for maintaining mental and physical wellbeing as they prepare for their first voyages. It provided invaluable guidance on handling the unique challenges of life at sea, fostering resilience and confidence among the cadets.
This training has undoubtedly given them a strong foundation to prioritize self-care and mental health, setting them on a path toward a safe, healthy, and fulfilling maritime career.”

Sri Lanka
The National Union of Seafarers Sri Lanka (NUSS) is supporting the Wellness at Sea training among cadets and ratings on their island.
Training began with 35 engineering cadets with overwhelmingly positive feedback highlighting the relevance and impact of the sessions. Encouraged by this success, the second batch is currently underway, continuing to build awareness and preparedness among future seafarers.
“MSTI Maritime Academy is proud to introduce the Wellness at Sea programme in collaboration with Sailors’ Society – marking a significant milestone as the first maritime institute in Sri Lanka to partner with this globally recognised initiative.
It brings a well-rounded approach to cadet development. Through this partnership, MSTI Maritime Academy reaffirms its commitment to developing not only skilled engineers but also mentally resilient and well-prepared seafarers, setting a new benchmark for maritime education in Sri Lanka.”
