Jakarta Medical Clinic

Providing an Indonesian seafaring community with access to affordable health care

Indonesia’s busiest port, Tanjung Priok, sits in a deprived area of the capital, Jakarta. Many living in this maritime community only have access to healthcare through a heavily subsidised weekly clinic, run by the Christian Church of Java.

When the clinic was forced to close in 2016 due to government restrictions, seafarers and their families were left without basic medical services at affordable fees. Sailors’ Society stepped in with funding, enabling it to reopen with new medical equipment.

In the first part of 2020, prior to a temporary closure due to pandemic restrictions, the clinic treated 330 patients. Since reopening its doors, the clinic has joined the fight against Covid-19, helping with coronavirus testing and providing vaccinations.

The clinic also offers community-led activities and workshops around common health ailments to improve the wellbeing of the local seafarers, their families and the wider seafaring community.

"Since 2017 we are very happy because Sailors' Society has supported our clinic with equipment that we needed. The equipment helps check people's blood pressure, cholesterol and uric acid - it helps us a lot here."
