Sea Mate

Sea Mate is an interactive, industry-leading training programme that brings a holistic approach to wellbeing on board your vessels.

As crews spend less time in port and more time at sea, it is vital that seafarers get the support they need whenever and wherever they need it.

Our revolutionary Sea Mate creates and equips a new role of Wellbeing Officer on board ships, with bespoke training provided by the charity’s global team.

It’s a comprehensive approach to supporting your seafarers by offering:

  • Training for Wellbeing Officers, equipping them with the skills to provide psychological and emotional support on board.
  • A certificate awarded to all participants, ensuring credibility and recognition of their role.
  • Collateral that you can use to promote the programme and its role within your company.
Sea Mate Officer

At its core, Sea Mate aims to train Wellbeing Officers for every vessel in a fleet, empowering seafarers to create a safe psychological and emotional space on board.

These officers serve as key support figures, providing crew members with someone to talk to – someone trained in wellbeing expertise and directly connected to Sailors’ Society’s crisis response team for immediate assistance when needed.

Sea Mate extends the relationship between expert trainers and Wellbeing Officers beyond the classroom, offering continuous support even after the training is completed. Through expert-led guidance, ongoing mentorship, and a strong peer network, Sea Mate ensures long-term impact, fostering resilience, teamwork, and wellbeing at sea.

Following on from an extremely successful pilot, we are now delighted to offer this programme to the wider industry.
