28 Feb, 2018

Karl Turner MP wished international maritime charity Sailors’ Society a happy 200th birthday at Westminster.

The Hull East MP said: “It was great to meet with Sailors’ Society to hear about all the fantastic work they do for seafarers around the globe. As many people in Hull know, seafaring is an important but difficult job.

“It’s great to see Sailors’ Society looking out for seafarers and I wish the charity a very happy birthday.”

Sailors’ Society’s advocacy manager Jon Foster said: “MPs have a long history of supporting the charity’s work. With seafaring such a crucial part of Hull’s heritage and economy we are grateful to Karl for continuing this tradition as we approach our bicentenary.”

The organisation was founded on 18 March 1818 to minister to the needs of destitute seafarers returning home from the Napoleonic Wars.

Sailors’ Society, which is based in Southampton, now works in 29 countries around the world.

It aims to transform the lives of seafarers and their families at home, in port and at sea through the delivery of chaplaincy, education and the relief of poverty and distress.
