Who We Are

Supporting seafarers and their families around the world

Founded more than 200 years ago in 1818, Sailors' Society is a Christian charity dedicated to caring for merchant seafarers - the 1.89 million men and women, hidden behind high walls of containers at ports or many hundreds of miles out at sea, who keep world trade moving.

We are there for them whether they are alone in their cabin, working in a busy port or at home recovering from illness or waiting for their next contract to start.

  • We provide wellness training and cadet conferences as well as a new e-learning platform that works on and offline to help seafarers stay mentally, emotionally and physically healthy
  • Our global helpline and crisis team speak a number of different languages and are available 24/7 to listen and provide support
  • We have emergency welfare grants available for seafarers and their families in desperate need to help pay for food, housing, education and medicine
  • Our mediated Peer-to-Peer Support Groups have been a huge success, giving crews the opportunity to support and share with one another
  • More than 2,000 seafarers received proactive mental health support on board their ships through our unique Ship Connect programme last year

“If Sailors’ Society had not been here, I would have fallen.”
