Sea Sunday 2023 – resources now available

7 Jun, 2023

Sailors’ Society has launched its 2023 Sea Sunday resources for churches – available at sailors-society.org/seasunday

The resources, which include suggested liturgy, talks and a mission and outreach service, are based on the story of Jesus calming the storm from Matthew’s Gospel.

Sea Sunday is set aside in the Church calendar as space for congregations to remember seafarers in prayer and to give thanks for their crucial work.

It also allows churches to support them by donating to the work of international maritime charity Sailors’ Society. And in the year that saw the Society launch its ground-breaking e-learning app and 24/7 virtual chaplaincy support to seafarers across the globe, these Sea Sunday resources highlight its much-needed welfare work.

Sailors’ Society CEO Sara Baade said: “The story of Jesus calming the storm is a biblical reference we use a lot because it is so relevant to our work. So many storms beset seafarers from the physical hurricanes and extremes of weather that affect their voyages to mental health issues around separation anxiety, loneliness, financial worries and fatigue.

“This Gospel story reminds us of the power of faith and how storms can beset us all. As the leading charity for the welfare and well-being of seafarers and their families, we provide a circle of care that offers 24/7 support to seafarers whenever they find themselves facing a storm in their lives.

“These resources are free to use, whether churches have two minutes or an entire service to highlight Sea Sunday, Sailors’ Society is delighted to connect with them to bring hope and transformation into the lives of seafarers and their families.”

Sea Sunday will be officially marked on July 9, but churches can celebrate anytime in the year.
